Flawed headline for article about women’s judo

A new article in the New York Times caught my eye: Japanese Women Kick and Punch Out a Space for Themselves in Sports.

It’s a pretty well-written piece on female judo in Japan. Unfortunately the headline is flawed. Writers and copy-editors always try to find witty headlines to accompany feature articles. Sadly, the writer (or copy-editor) seems to think judo is about punching and kicking!

Sadly, that’s about right for the NY Times, which long ago abandoned any rigorous journalism standards. As you say, it was a fine article, but what a disgrace of a headline — the sort of thing I’d expect to see in some small-town local newspaper in about 1954.

I wonder how long it will take the rest of the world to catch up to the Japanese in women’s judo; given the intensity and volume of training I see Japanese women undertaking in Japan, I suspect it will be quite a while.
